Clearly Seeing the Invisible God
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
(John 1:10-11 NIV)
Jesus is the Creator of the universe. “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3). Creation, itself, is a proof of God’s existence. The apostle Paul tells us in Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-- his eternal power and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (NIV). This invisible, indiscernible, imperceptible, undetectable, improvable, unverifiable God (my thesaurus ran out of words) and all His “invisible qualities” are “clearly seen.”
Again, Paul says the invisible God is clearly seen. What a paradox. In fact, not only is He clearly seen, but He can also be understood simply by observing what has been made! Atheism, agnosticism, idolatry, ignorance, and apathy are simply unacceptable to God. When men argue their philosophies before Him on that Day, He will simply call the earth, the land and seas, the heavens and their entire starry host to testify against the “excuses” of men. God’s testimony is that our very own existence, the fact that we are self aware, that we did not create ourselves, is all the evidence He needs in order to prove, beyond any doubt, that He is Lord of everything! The invisible God is clearly seen and understood by what He has made; therefore, when men defend their rebellion and unbelief, they are “without excuse.” There is no excuse for not believing in, surrendering to, or trusting in God. Even the demons believe and tremble!
Our text tells us that though Jesus made all things, when He came to His own world, to those He created, they did not recognize Him, and His “own” did not receive Him! Although the voice of the antichrist cries out for its right to eliminate God from the public square in these United States, the majority of Americans profess to believe that they are created by God! They profess to put their trust in Him for their salvation. They still believe that He is the “Reason for the Season.” However invisible Jesus may appear this “holiday” season, it is impossible to hide Him! Jesus is evident in every falling snow flake, displayed upon every ray of the glorious sun, manifest in every child born to a woman and arrayed in every gleaming star of the midnight sky. Jesus is the light of the world! The heavens declare the glory of God. All of creation testifies of Him. He cannot be hidden!
Do me a favor. Keep watch for the nighttime sky during this Christmas season. The next time it is clear, put on a warm coat, hat, scarf and mittens, go out into the backyard and look up. It will only take a few seconds and you will “listen” to the testimony of the heavens declaring the glory of God. You may also hear the angels declaring “Peace on earth and good will to men!”
I will not wish you Happy “Holidays,” for we can only celebrate one Holy-Day. But may every day be a holy day. And may you especially have a Happy, Healthy, and Holy Christmas. Jesus is alive! If you don’t believe me, go take a look in the mirror. You are made in the image of glory.
Merry Christmas!
